The term Doula means “a person trained to provide advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort” and is derived from the Greek word doulē which means helper or servant. Since the 1960’s the usage of the term Doula has been used in a childbirth context, and referred to a person supporting a mother before, during, and just after childbirth.
The term doula is now being used in a much broader context involving many different stages of life, such as a “sleep doula” who helps families get their sleeping routine on track to an "end-of-life doula” who helps individuals and families walk through the end of life process.
